My Personal Story
When I purchased my first house, I took on a debt load that was less than I was qualified to carry, and I had a 20% downpayment. My needs were simple at the time and I saw my mortgage as a debt I did not want to have hanging over my head.
Soon after the purchase, I got married to a lovely woman who shared that same value of having low monthly overhead costs, so we decided to pay our mortgage out as fast as we could. We made some adjustments to our home expenses and were on track to pay our mortgage out in 7 years, but we came into a windfall that made us mortgage free in 5 years. It was orginally amortized over 25 years.
